What Is the Definition of Happiness?
The definition of happiness, according to the dictionary, is a state of positive self-esteem and well being characterized by feelings of contentment and good spirits. It is freedom from want and distress and a consciousness of the good order of things. Simply put, it is inner peace.
This definition of happiness suggests that we accept the past, live in the present, and look hopefully to the future. A smile is probably the most common symbol of happiness in humans.
Writing out the definition of happiness is relatively easy. Achieving it is another matter entirely. You must have a plan if you truly intend to achieve a happier life. The content of this website is designed to help you develop this plan.
Being happy is virtually impossible without healthy self-esteem.
So what is self-esteem?
It is how you see yourself and how you feel about your achievements. It is about whether you believe in yourself and give yourself the credit you deserve.
It is a crucial component of personal happiness, rewarding relationships, and useful achievement. You can't see it but it's there when you look at yourself in the mirror. You can't hear it but it's there every time you tell someone about yourself.
The feelings and thoughts we have about ourselves vary constantly depending on the experiences we are having at the time. But positive self-esteem is something more fundamental than the normal ups and downs of every day life.
If we have good self-esteem, the every day ups and downs will only result in temporary variations in how we feel about ourselves. But if our self-esteem is poor, these ups and downs may cause major mood swings and make a huge difference in our peace of mind.
How do you talk to yourself?
We all constantly engage in conversations with ourselves. Some call it “monkey mind” while others refer to it as “mind chatter”. Whatever the label, it results in “our every day way of being”.
Those of us with healthy self-esteem hear an inner voice that is positive and reassuring. But for those in whom it is lacking, the inner voice is harsh and condemning, constantly criticizing and belittling your efforts and accomplishments.
“You’re no good!” it says, over and over again, until you begin to believe it. Understanding how you think, whether positive and uplifting or negative and depressing, is critical in achieving mental prosperity.
By deciding to work towards a healthy self-esteem, you can begin to meet daily challenges and achieve happiness. The quality of your life is determined by your self-esteem and ultimately your beliefs.
Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t, you’re right.
